Description of the 10th Edition Codex: Tyranids
The Hive Mind: The codex delves into the lore of the Tyranid Hive Mind, the terrifying gestalt consciousness that drives the entire species. Its psychic presence, known as the "Shadow in the Warp," blankets the galaxy, disrupting Warp-based communication and driving enemies to madness.
Narrative and artwork: The book contains extensive background lore on the Tyranids' history, biology, and ravenous behavior. It also includes epic artwork showcasing the horrifying alien swarms and their immense bio-engineered monsters.
Rules and detachments: The 10th Edition codex is structured around detachments rather than hive fleets, allowing for a mix of playstyles. It features six themed detachments, each with unique rules, enhancements, and stratagems:
Invasion Fleet: An all-rounder detachment that allows you to choose an army-wide buff at the start of the game.
Crusher Stampede: Focuses on large, monstrous creatures.
Unending Swarm: Concentrates on overwhelming the enemy with hordes of smaller gaunts.
Assimilation Swarm: Emphasizes regeneration and the harvesting of biomass.
Vanguard Onslaught: Highlights speed and infiltration using vanguard units like Lictors and Genestealers.
Synaptic Nexus: Built around powerful synapse creatures to focus the Hive Mind's will for various effects.
Datasheets: The codex includes 47 datasheets, detailing the profiles, wargear, and unique abilities for every Tyranid unit.
Crusade and Combat Patrol rules: In addition to standard rules, the book also contains specific rules for running narrative campaigns and fast-paced Combat Patrol games.
Painting guide: A painting guide is included, offering tips and color schemes for various hive fleets.
Lore of the Tyranids
For thousands of years, the Tyranids have been traveling across the intergalactic void in vast Hive Fleets, consuming all organic life in their path. They first made contact with the Imperium in the late 41st millennium, with the first major invasion coming from Hive Fleet Behemoth. The Hive Fleets are drawn to the Milky Way by the psychic beacon of the Astronomican but will consume any other life they encounter.
Advance tactics: The Tyranid invasion often begins with the infiltration of Genestealer Cults into a world's society. The cult's psychic signal acts as a beacon, guiding the Hive Fleet to the planet. Once the fleet arrives, the cult launches an uprising to destabilize the planet's defenses.
Adaptation: The Tyranids have no mechanical technology. Their weapons, ships, and armies are all living organisms, constantly adapted and optimized for the threats they face through the absorption of genetic material from their prey.
Swarm assault: Tyranid forces are known for overwhelming enemies with sheer numbers. The Hive Mind directs the swarm through a network of psychic relays known as "synapse creatures," ensuring total coordination and preventing smaller organisms from succumbing to their base instincts.
