The Games Workshop Warhammer 40,000 Introductory Set (10th Edition - 2023) is an all-in-one starter kit designed to teach complete beginners how to build, paint, and play the tabletop game. The set pits a small force of Space Marines against a Tyranid horde in three progressive training missions. It is a scaled-down experience compared to the more comprehensive Warhammer 40,000 Starter Set or Ultimate Starter Set, offering less variety but providing all the necessary tools and guidance.
Box contents
Miniatures:
The push-fit miniatures in the box do not require glue for assembly and represent two opposing factions.
Space Marines: 5 Infernus Marines, armored soldiers with powerful flame weapons.
Tyranids: 10 Termagants, basic swarming creatures, and 1 Ripper Swarm, a small pack of ravenous beasts.
Hobby tools and paints:
Unlike the other starter sets, the Introductory Set includes the basic supplies needed to get started with the modeling aspect of the hobby.
Tools: Citadel Starter Clippers and a Citadel Colour Starter Brush.
Paints: 5x 12ml Citadel Colour paints in colors suitable for the included miniatures, including Abaddon Black, Wraithbone, Balthasar Gold, Naggaroth Night, and Macragge Blue.
Gaming supplies:
Everything needed to play the included missions is provided in the box.
Handbook: A 48-page softcover Warhammer 40,000 Introductory Set Handbook with construction guides, tutorials, and training missions.
Playing mat: A 30" by 22.4" double-sided paper gaming mat featuring battlefield art.
Tokens: 22 cardboard tokens and terrain markers to mark walls, objectives, and track turns.
Dice and ruler: One range ruler and six six-sided dice.
Who is it for?
First-timers: The Introductory Set is ideal for complete beginners with no prior wargaming experience. It provides a comprehensive, low-cost starting point with all the tools, paints, and simplified rules necessary to get started without a large investment.
Casual players: The simplified rules and scenarios are perfect for casual gaming with friends or family.
Hobby explorers: The set allows new players to experience all three core pillars of the hobby—building, painting, and playing—to see if they enjoy the experience before committing to more expansive and expensive sets.
Downsides and considerations
Limited longevity: The small number of models and simplified rules offer limited gameplay variety. Once you master the training scenarios, you will likely need to upgrade to a larger set to expand your game.
Basic components: The included clippers and brush are of basic quality. More serious hobbyists will want to invest in higher-quality tools and more paint colors as they progress.
Not Combat Patrol-ready: Unlike the Ultimate Starter Set, the included forces are not large enough to play the larger-scale Combat Patrol games out of the box, requiring more purchases to build a standard army.
