In the Warhammer 40,000 universe, Tyranid Gargoyles are flying bio-constructs of the Hive Mind. Also known as "Hellbats," they are fast, numerous shock troops that serve as the vanguard of a Tyranid swarm, spreading terror and confusion before the main fleet's arrival. They are a variant of the "Gaunt" genus, similar in form to the ground-based Termagants, but with leathery wings.
Physical characteristics
Winged physique: Gargoyles have a similar six-limbed body plan to many Tyranids. However, their fore and hind limbs have atrophied, giving way to large, membranous, bat-like wings. These wings grant them exceptional aerial mobility.
Weapon biomorphs: A Gargoyle's middle limbs are its primary weapon platforms. They are typically equipped with a fleshborer, a living gun that fires flesh-boring beetles at the enemy.
Venomous attack: In addition to their ranged weapon, Gargoyles can spit a potent corrosive venom from their fanged mouths. The venom can blind opponents or inflict painful, burning agony.
Chitinous armor: Like other Tyranids, Gargoyles have tough, chitinous armor plates for protection.
Battlefield role and behavior
Fast attack vanguard: Gargoyles are often the first wave of a Tyranid assault, descending from the sky in vast, sun-blotting broods. Their primary goal is to overwhelm enemies, sow panic, and soften up a planet's defenses for the main Tyranid forces.
Infiltrators: They have an unusual quirk that drives them to seek out small entry points in enemy structures, such as vent pipes or ventilation shafts. This allows them to bypass fortifications and attack defenders from within, spreading chaos and panic.
Synapse-dependent: Like other lesser Tyranid creatures, Gargoyles are mindless on their own. They rely on synapse creatures, such as Tyranid Warriors or Hive Tyrants, to receive the Hive Mind's commands and operate with unified purpose. If they move out of synapse range, they can revert to more feral, instinctive behaviors.
Limited endurance: Their wings are relatively small and delicate for their size, and they lack the endurance for especially long flights, often needing to be transported by larger Tyranid creatures like Harridan Bio-Titans.
Products and miniatures
The Tyranid Gargoyle Brood is available as a multi-part plastic model kit, containing 10 miniatures along with the necessary flying bases for assembly. The models are unpainted and require assembly. These miniatures can be purchased from the official Warhammer webstore, as well as various retailers such as Maple Airbrush Supplies and Boutique Awesome.
