Star Realms is a fast-paced, two-player deck-building game of galactic combat. Players build their fleets and destroy their opponent by purchasing ships and bases to improve their deck over the course of the game. The first player to reduce their opponent's Authority (life total) from 50 to zero wins.
Gameplay overview
Star Realms combines deck-building mechanics with player-versus-player combat in a space-themed setting.
Starting decks: Each player begins the game with a personal 10-card deck consisting of eight Scouts (which provide trade) and two Vipers (which provide combat).
Trade Row: In the center of the table, five cards from a shared Trade Deck are laid face-up to form the Trade Row. These cards are available for purchase by both players.
Game turn: On your turn, you draw and play five cards from your deck.
Trade: Use your trade points to buy new ships and bases from the Trade Row. Purchased cards are placed in your discard pile to be shuffled into your deck later.
Combat: Use your combat points to attack your opponent's authority or destroy their bases.
Bases and outposts: Some cards are bases, which are placed in front of you and provide ongoing benefits each turn. Some bases are also Outposts, which must be attacked and destroyed before an opponent can directly attack your authority.
Factions: Ships and bases belong to one of four factions, which offer different strengths and strategies. Many cards have powerful "Ally" abilities that activate if you have another card of the same faction in play. The factions are:
Trade Federation: Focuses on generating trade and authority.
Blobs: Specializes in generating large amounts of combat and trashing cards.
Star Empire: Specializes in combat and making your opponent discard cards.
Machine Cult: Focuses on scrapping cards from your deck and defending.
Winning the game: The game ends when one player reduces their opponent's starting 50 Authority points to zero.
Key features
Fast-paced: A typical game lasts around 20 minutes.
Strategic depth: Every game offers strategic decisions as you decide what cards to buy and when to be aggressive. The cycling Trade Row adds a layer of randomness, meaning each game feels fresh and different.
Highly portable: The entire core game is contained in a single small card box, making it easy to take anywhere.
Expandable: Though the core set is for two players, expansions add new cards and game modes, including options for more players.
Easy to learn: The game's mechanics are simple to grasp, especially for those familiar with other deck-builders.
