Tales from the Yawning Portal is a Dungeons & Dragons adventure anthology that collects and updates seven classic dungeon crawls from the game's history for use with the 5th Edition rules. The adventures are framed as tales told by adventurers in the iconic Yawning Portal tavern in Waterdeep. Dungeon Masters can run these adventures as standalone one-shots or link them together to form a full campaign.
Framing narrative
The book begins at the Yawning Portal tavern, which is famous for its massive, 140-foot-deep well leading to the massive dungeon of Undermountain. The adventures are presented as stories and rumors that adventurers hear from the tavern's patrons or its enigmatic owner, Durnan. This framing device offers DMs a convenient way to transition from one dungeon to the next.
The seven adventures
The collection includes a range of dungeons that span many levels of play, showcasing the evolution of adventure design over D&D's history. The updated adventures are:
The Sunless Citadel (Levels 1–3): Originally the first adventure published for D&D 3rd Edition, this is an excellent introduction for new players and DMs. Players explore a fallen stronghold now home to feuding goblin and kobold tribes.
The Forge of Fury (Levels 3–5): The sequel to The Sunless Citadel, this dungeon takes players to a ruined dwarven fortress filled with diverse threats, culminating in a climactic battle with a black dragon.
The Hidden Shrine of Tamoachan (Levels 5–7): This adventure, originally from 1st Edition AD&D, is a trap-filled, Mesoamerican-inspired pyramid where players race to escape before a poisonous atmosphere overcomes them.
White Plume Mountain (Levels 8): A classic "funhouse" dungeon from 1st Edition, where adventurers must retrieve three legendary intelligent weapons from a series of bizarre and lethal rooms.
Dead in Thay (Levels 9–11): This deadly mega-dungeon, originally a 5th Edition playtest module, challenges characters to infiltrate a magical prison run by the evil Red Wizards.
Against the Giants (Levels 11): A compilation of three classic 1st Edition modules, this saga sends players to take on the fortresses of hill, frost, and fire giants.
Tomb of Horrors (High-level): One of D&D's most infamous and lethal dungeons, created by Gary Gygax to punish overconfident players. It is an incredibly difficult and unforgiving gauntlet of deadly tricks and traps.
