Curse of Strahd is a popular gothic horror adventure module for the 5th edition of the Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game. Players are drawn into the dreary, mist-shrouded land of Barovia, ruled by the vampire tyrant Strahd von Zarovich, and must find a way to defeat him in his castle to escape.
Setting and atmosphere
A pocket dimension: The adventure takes place in the Demiplane of Dread, a land of gloom and despair called Barovia. This demiplane is surrounded by a deadly, impenetrable mist that prevents residents and visitors from leaving.
Gothic horror tone: Unlike many high-fantasy D&D campaigns, Curse of Strahd is a classic gothic horror story. The atmosphere is tense and foreboding, filled with vampires, werewolves, and other dreadful monsters that stalk the land.
Despairing populace: The native Barovian people are a superstitious and distrustful folk, with most lacking souls and having an empty, joyless demeanor. They live in fear under Strahd's tyrannical rule and constant torment.
Open-ended exploration: While there is a central storyline, the adventure is relatively free-form once players reach the town of Vallaki. They can explore the valley's different locations, uncover mysteries, and decide their next move.
Core storyline
The initial hook: The adventure begins when a party of adventurers is mysteriously pulled into Barovia. This can happen through an optional haunted house prologue called the Death House or by following a lead that draws them into the mists.
The tragic backstory: Count Strahd von Zarovich was a mortal warlord who conquered the valley centuries ago. He fell obsessively in love with a woman named Tatyana, but his advances were spurned. In a fit of jealousy, he murdered his brother, Sergei, on his wedding day. When Tatyana fled and leaped to her death from the castle, Strahd made a pact with dark powers to become an immortal vampire, forever trapping him and all of Barovia.
Strahd's obsession: Since becoming a vampire, Strahd has repeatedly seen Tatyana reincarnated in the bodies of Barovian women. He obsessively pursues each one, only to see her die tragically before he can possess her. The latest reincarnation, Ireena Kolyana, is a central figure in the campaign.
The Tarokka reading: Early in the adventure, the party can have their fortunes told by Madam Eva, a mysterious Vistana seer. Using a Tarokka deck, she reveals the randomized locations of three crucial magic items—the Tome of Strahd, the Holy Symbol of Ravenkind, and the Sunsword—and identifies a fated ally who can help the party defeat Strahd.
The final confrontation: With the magical items and their ally in tow, the players can finally confront Strahd in his ancestral home, Castle Ravenloft.
Key themes
Hopelessness vs. heroism: The campaign explores the balance between gothic horror's signature sense of dread and the heroic fantasy of Dungeons & Dragons. Players must find ways to persevere and find glimmers of hope in a relentlessly dark and oppressive world.
Psychological abuse: As the dark lord of Barovia, Strahd uses psychological manipulation and torment to toy with both the land's inhabitants and the adventuring party. He is a predator who uses his power and cunning to create toxic and abusive relationships with others.
Consequences of hubris: The tragedy that led to Strahd's eternal imprisonment was fueled by his own pride and jealousy. The campaign's events serve as a continuous echo of his past failures, which players can witness and perhaps overcome.
