Call of the Netherdeep is a Dungeons & Dragons adventure for characters levels 3–12, set in the world of Exandria from the web series Critical Role. The story follows the players as they answer a psychic call from a long-lost hero and demigod named Alyxian, who is trapped in an otherworldly prison of despair. The party must race against a team of rival adventurers to decide the fate of this imprisoned being and potentially change the course of history.
Key plot points
The adventure is structured around a journey across two continents to uncover the truth about Alyxian's imprisonment.
The Festival of Merit: The story begins in the Xhorhasian coastal town of Jigow. During a local festival, the player characters and their rivals discover a powerful artifact known as the Jewel of Three Prayers.
Answering the call: The jewel's discovery triggers a psychic vision from Alyxian, the Apotheon, an ancient hero from a divine war called the Calamity. He begs for help from his dark prison, setting both the player characters and the rival party on a quest to learn the truth about his fate.
Journey across continents: The search for answers takes the party first to the demon-haunted military outpost of Bazzoxan. They then travel to the desert oasis city of Ank'Harel, where they can ally with one of three factions to aid their research.
Entering the Netherdeep: The adventure culminates in a deep dive into the Netherdeep itself—a nightmarish underwater realm created from Alyxian's sorrow and corrupted by a strange mineral called ruidium.
Notable features
Rival party: A competing party of five non-player characters (NPCs) is pursuing the same goals as the heroes. The players' relationship with these rivals—whether they become friendly allies, bitter adversaries, or something in between—greatly affects the story and its possible endings.
Psychological horror: As the players venture deeper into the Netherdeep, they experience the psychological manifestations of Alyxian's painful memories. The adventure explores themes of heroism, despair, and corruption on a deeply personal level.
Significant choices: The module's conclusion is heavily influenced by the choices the players make, especially during the final battle for Alyxian's soul. Depending on the party's actions, they could redeem the corrupted hero, kill him, or accidentally unleash his wrath upon Exandria.
