The Death Korps of Krieg are a famously grim and fatalistic Astra Militarum regiment from the planet Krieg, renowned for their unflinching resolve and disregard for their own lives. Seeking atonement for their world's past rebellion, these soldiers are conditioned to excel in brutal, high-attrition siege and trench warfare.
History
The Krieg Civil War: In the 40th millennium, the prosperous hive world of Krieg revolted against the Imperium. In response, the loyalist Colonel Jurten launched an atomic bombardment, dooming the world to a nuclear winter and initiating a civil war that lasted over 500 years.
Atonement through death: After generations of fighting on their poison-choked world, the loyalists' descendants, the Death Korps, re-emerged with a single-minded goal: to pay for their ancestors' treachery with glorious martyrdom in the Emperor's name.
Engine of war: The Departmento Munitorum has since made Krieg's sole purpose the production of new regiments. The world uses unusual, and sometimes abhorrent, methods like "Vitae Womb" birthing to maintain its immense tithe of soldiers.
Characteristics
Cult of Sacrifice: Every aspect of a Krieg guardsman's life is dedicated to warfare and ultimate sacrifice. They are taught from birth that their lives are expendable and that bravery is expected, not rewarded. Medals and decorations are not issued.
Brutal training: Training is a constant and brutal process on the radioactive surface of Krieg. It is designed to break recruits' spirits and bodies and rebuild them stronger, with high fatality rates. The ultimate goal is selfless service and unwavering loyalty.
Grim and impersonal: Death Korps soldiers are insular, unemotional, and taciturn. They often use numerical designations instead of names to reinforce their identity as a cog in the Imperial war machine.
Trench warfare specialists: Their 500-year civil war forged them into masters of siege and trench warfare, favoring massive infantry assaults supported by sustained artillery bombardments to grind down opponents.
Distinct equipment: They are recognized by their World War I-inspired greatcoats, gas masks, and spiked helmets. They carry a more powerful Lucius-pattern lasgun and a ubiquitous entrenching tool, which they are trained to use as a melee weapon.
Special units and practices
Death Riders: Cavalry units ride genetically-engineered "Krieg Steeds" augmented to survive toxic battlefields. Death Riders are selected for their independent thought and initiative.
Combat Engineers: Specialists in subterranean warfare, these soldiers dig tunnels and use chemical weaponry to bypass and assault enemy fortifications.
Grenadiers: These elite heavy infantry are chosen from veteran squads. With carapace armor and upgraded weaponry, they spearhead assaults and have an extremely high casualty rate.
Quartermasters: Instead of medics, the Death Korps uses quartermasters. Rooted in their civil war history, their role is to grant the "Emperor's Peace" (an honorable field execution) to mortally wounded soldiers and recover their equipment
